The first flexible photographic roll film was marketed by George Eastman, founder of Kodak in 1885, but this original “film” was actually a coating on a paper base. As part of the processing, the image-bearing layer was stripped from the paper and transferred to a hardened gelatin support. It was made from highly flammable nitrocellulose known as nitrate film. Because Niépce’s camera photographs required an extremely long exposure , he sought to greatly improve his bitumen process or replace it with one that was more practical. With an eye to eventual commercial exploitation, the partners opted for total secrecy. The first permanent photoetching was an image produced in 1822 by the French inventor Nicéphore Niépce, but it was destroyed in a later attempt to make prints from it.

Tourism and photography combine to create a “tourist gaze”in which local inhabitants are positioned and defined by the camera lens. However, it has also been argued that there exists a “reverse gaze” through which indigenous photographees can position the tourist photographer as a shallow consumer of images. Wildlife photography involves capturing images of various forms of wildlife. Unlike other forms of photography such as product or food photography, successful wildlife photography requires a photographer to choose the right place and right time when specific wildlife are present and active. It often requires great patience and considerable skill and command of the right photographic equipment.

One layer was sensitized to record the red-dominated part of the spectrum, another layer recorded only the green part and a third recorded only the blue. British chemist John Herschel made many contributions to the new field. He invented the cyanotype process, later familiar as the “blueprint”. He was the first to use the terms “photography”, “negative” and “positive”. He had discovered in 1819 that sodium thiosulphate was a solvent of silver halides, and in 1839 he informed Talbot that it could be used to “fix” silver-halide-based photographs and make them completely light-fast. RISD approaches photography as an ever-changing set of technical, conceptual and aesthetic conditions that exist within a broad social and cultural context.

The purpose of photography can vary depending on what the photographer is trying to achieve. For example, documentary and news photographers capture images for the purpose of providing detailed account of actual events, while hobbyist photographers aim to capture life moments with their families and friends. They’re quicker and easier to use, not to mention their seamless integration with social media. It only makes sense to get a dedicated camera if your phone isn’t good enough for the photos you want (like photographing sports or low-light environments) or if you’re specifically interested in photography as a hobby.

The discovery of the camera obscura (“dark chamber” in Latin) that provides an image of a scene dates back to ancient China. Greek mathematicians Aristotle and Euclid independently described a camera obscura in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE. In the 6th century CE, Byzantine mathematician Anthemius of Tralles used a type of camera obscura in his experiments. We believe photography is an inclusive medium with a unique ability to shape emotions, convey stories and effect change. Through coursework, research seminars and independent studio work, the MFA in Photography invites you to explore the medium as a basis for self-expression across a range of professional contexts.

Discover how to create amazing photographs by adjusting focus, exposure, and white balance settings. The modernist period tended to be media-specific, where artists worked primarily in a single medium, such as painting or sculpture. However, social and political changes in the 1960s resulted in a shift towards social considerations in art in general and a reconsideration of Photography News as an artistic medium.
